Desiré | San Antonio Portrait Photography

Desiré has been a good friend of mine for many years. She’s fun to be with, great to talk to, and she’s always very stylish with her hair done beautifully. Over the tumultuous summer of 2020, she made a decision to embrace and love her natural hair, as a testament to black women and the power they hold within their own selves.

She says it more beautifully than I ever could:

I am a black woman and this is my hair! Growing up I was conditioned to think that nappy hair wasn’t pretty or accepted! It’s sad that we has African American women feel like we can’t rock our natural hair. No longer will I feel ashamed or not pretty for my nappy hair. Our hair is kinky, coily, nappy, Big and beautiful. That’s the way God made me! This journey has been a very very emotional one but this is my hair!! And I love it

“Being natural isn’t just a statement, it is the closest I can get to being myself. I wear my hair in a fro because I think it expresses exactly who I am and exactly where I come from.”

West Of Here | Personal

We spend a lot of time in West Texas. Marfa, to be exact. We love it out there, for the simple fact that it’s a small town, wide open space, disconnected-from-the-city, magical place. For the 5th time this year, we made our way out to the desert and spent a few weeks, enjoying the desert.
I documented a few of our days with my trusty little Fuji X100S and even though it’s a little out of the norm for my blog, I decided to share some of my favorite shots here.

If you ever find yourself needing a break in a place where you can slow down and wander around in a place where time slows down, go visit Marfa, Texas.
