Should You Have A First Look?

If you are planning a wedding, you've no doubt seen and heard all about the trend of seeing your partner before the ceremony for a private moment (and photo op!). This trend seems to be either loved or hated, and if you are on the fence, keep reading!

  • Are you or your fiancé uncomfortable with the idea of being emotional in front of your guests?

  • Are you short on time or trying to streamline your wedding day schedule?

  • Would you enjoy having a few private moments before you spend the rest of your day around a lot of people?

For a photographer, a first look is a double win. Not only is it an additional photo opportunity, but it is a way to capture some raw emotion in a very personal way. Not to mention the fact that it helps alleviate some of the stress of post-ceremony photos. You can even take all bridal party photos before the ceremony, once the bride and groom have seen each other, leaving only family photos to take- score!

The benefits for a couple to do a first look, besides a more concise timeline, is all about the private moment. When I shoot a first look, I do my best to shoot from a little bit of a distance. This gives the couple as much privacy as possible. After I've taken the photos, I slip away and allow the couple a few moments to just be alone together. In the midst of what can become a very hectic day, a quiet moment together can do wonders in calming your nerves. Until a couple leaves the reception, many times the first look is the only private moment they will have for the entire wedding day!

I won't end this post without adding in the only negative that I can think of: tradition. I do believe that traditions can be beautiful and they definitely have their place. However, I also believe that there are so many traditions that can be kept and held sacred, so finding one that fits you and your partner is the best choice. The bottom line of any wedding is this- if it fits the bride and groom, it is the perfect choice. Do what works best for you, and it will be the perfect day!
